BEARSKIN by James McLaughlin

BEARSKIN has been chosen as a July Indie Next Pick. One of the nominating booksellers said of the novel, “This powerful debut is a novel of terrible beauty. Using evocative prose, the author perfectly describes the lush landscape of the Virginia Appalachians while juxtaposing them against a world of primal violence.” Shelf Awareness has given BEARSKIN a starred review, calling it “an extraordinary first novel of powerful prose, Bearskin captures the blurry line between studying primordial nature and being a part of it.”

BookPage also reviewed the novel, and said, “Part thriller, part crime novel, part dreamscape…Smart and sophisticated, with animals both wild and domestic acting as metaphors, Bearskin is a gritty, down-home tale told with brute force. Rice is a memorable, reluctant hero for both his community and the animals in his charge.” Ecco will publish the book June 12, 2018.
